Tekken has come a long way in the gaming industry. Ten years ago Playstation owners had the privilege of playing a game that has become a very recognized franchise in the gaming industry...Tekken. The series had some features which were hit and miss at times. Nevertheless, for the most part, Tekken has held true to being an arcade smash hit. Following up on the 2005 success with Tekken 5, Namco is revitalizing the series by bringing it to the next generation of gaming, on the PS3.
Impressions of the next-gen title were present at the E3 show, and will [assumingly] be present at the Taipei Game show. But here at the Playstationcore, we’ll give you a little insight about what to expect from the upcoming Tekken for the PS3.
Most notably, are the graphics; the details are impeccable. We only get a glimpse of Jin Kazama performing a couple of quick moves, but everything looks amazing. If this is any indication of what we’re to expect from the PS3's hardware capabilities, gamers won’t be disappointed. You can actually see the wrinkles shift and move in Jin’s gi as he gracefully alters his fighting stance. There are also tons of reflective details and refraction lighting that rotates and bends to every corner and crevice of his pant’s wrinkles. If that’s not enough, there are also individual glands of sweat that asymmetrically run down from his pores. As Jin moves about you can actually see the droplets of sweat fly appropriately from his arm, as he fully extends a vicious punch.
One thing to note is the way Jin’s movements coincide with gravity. We’ve seen this feature a lot from Dead or Alive games, but only for certain body parts. In this case, as Jin hits the full extension of the punch, you can actually see a minor pull on his biceps. You can also see the appropriate reaction of the muscles tensing and flexing...signifying the speed and force of power behind the punch.
The technology looks strikingly reminiscent to what has been presented to us in Fight Night Round 3. Even though the promotional video was only 30 seconds and showed us none of the actual gameplay elements, we at least have a small idea of what to expect from Tekken 6, especially as a standard for the upcoming visual presentation of the game. Hopefully, though, Namco will take hints from the errs of recent fighting games, and avoid how many of them failed to bring a new direction to the genre. It will be extremely cool to see the new Tekken take the fighting genre outside the simple boundaries, arenas, and explicitly simple arcade mechanics, and bring in something entirely new.
If Tekken 6 ushers in the next generation of gaming for the PS3 with elements and features as unique, detailed, and compelling as the graphics engine, we could be in for a serious treat.
