Square Enix has been taking the Final Fantasy franchise in many new directions since the release of Final Fantasy X. Final Fantasy X-2 was the first direct sequel ever; Final Fantasy XI was an MMORPG; the upcoming Final Fantasy XII has completely done away with many of the gameplay conventions typical to a Final Fantasy game in order to breath some life into the series (as if it needed it); and now Final Fantasy XIII is set to be released with a series of different games. Square Enix has titled this “Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy XIII” which literally translates to "The New Tale of The Crystal." Final Fantasy veterans will recognize that the Crystal has been a very integral part of many of the Final Fantasy games released throughout the years. The last Final Fantasy game to have the Crystal in the forefront of the plot, however, was the PSOne game Final Fantasy IX, so it is nice to see the Crystal returning to a true Final Fantasy title.
While the traditional installment of the Fabula Nova Crystallis project is going to be Final Fantasy XIII, there is another game titled Final Fantasy Versus XIII that is drawing additional hype. Featuring a mysterious main character who mentally summons weapons and has an eerie backdrop, Versus XIII has Square Enix fans jumping up and down in excitement. It doesn't that many of the members behind the Advent Children movie as well as Kingdom Hearts 2 are onboard and actively working on this title. Nomura himself is said to be doing the character design, which should make some fans very happy.
The only information Square Enix has decided to let the media in on thus far is a short and very impressive CG trailer. The trailer begins with a view of a dark and dank city which doesn't look that friendly to live in. The trailer then switches to the interior throne room of what appears to be a castle. Sitting on a black throne and looking rather bored is what we think is the main character of Versus XIII. He has red eyes, semi-long blue hair, and is outfitted in a suit that would make Cloud Strife jealous. Nomura's design influence is clearly evident. After a few moments the main character rises and slowly walks outside to the steps of his castle. Here he is greeted with an army of soldiers, armed with rifles but armored in medieval armor (always a great combo). A few tense moments pass before the soldiers open fire on the main character…but the bullets don't even get close thanks to an energy barrier the main character seems to have control over. Shocked, the soldiers watch as the mysterious man forms twelve melee weapons out of the air. They coolly float around his body as he forms his own melee weapon and then charges. It's here that the trailer ended.
It's evident that the CG movies are in good hands with the Advent Children team behind the helm. The CG movie not only captured the mood, but also had the style that Advent Children has made popular. As for gameplay, we can only speculate on what Versus XIII will cover. Since the Kingdom Hearts 2 team is onboard it is a logical to guess that Versus XIII will be much more action oriented as opposed to the traditional RPG style of Final Fantasy XII or Final Fantasy XIII (even though their battles are considerably more action oriented, too).
When it comes down to it, knowing Square Enix, it is going to be a long time before we really se some concrete information about this title or get to see some actual gameplay. I just hope that the Final Fantasy XIII project as a whole doesn't take as long as Final Fantasy XII did, because Versus XIII looks awesome.
