Ninja Gaiden is one of those games that make people either cringe or smile. On the one hand, it was so hard many casual gamers found themselves quickly exchanging it for another title, while the hardcore crowd fought their way through a series of difficult, but awesome encounters. It has been a few years since a Ninja Gaiden game has been released, so it isn't surprising to hear that Ninja Gaiden Sigma was announced for the PS3. However, don't get all excited. This is, again, just a remake of the popular Ninja Gaiden that released for the Xbox a few years back. Yes, another remake…even though there already was a remake titled Ninja Gaiden Black (we’ll call this one NGB for short). Talk about milking all you can out of a franchise (you thought EA was bad).
But unlike other companies that prefer to release sub-par sequels or add-ons, Team Ninja is making the effort to create a truly awesome remake for the PS3. The biggest change? The graphics. Watching Ninja Gaiden Sigma in full HD via the PS3, is truly a sight to behold. Quite honestly, Team Ninja could have stopped here and Ninja Gaiden Sigma probably would have sold a good amount of copies. Having a small library of good games (arguably, only one) would make Ninja Gaiden Sigma a likely candidate to sit next to Resistance.
But Team Ninja is also reworking the game completely. There are going to be new areas (with water), new weapons, and several new enemies for hardcore Gaiden fans to tackle. At the same time, though, one has to wonder if Team Ninja is going to uphold the goal of making Sigma a more accessible game than even Ninja Gaiden Black. The whole purpose for NGB was to make it so gamers who weren't proficient in the Gaiden gameplay could select to fight on an easier mode. With having to move over to a new control (Xbox to PS3), let's hope that Team Ninja has kept the easier difficulties. Probably most exciting though is the confirmation that Rachel will be playable in Sigma. For those who don't remember Rachel, she was the monster hunter who was searching for her lost sister. She helped the main character many times (and had to be saved more than once by him as well). Part of the story mode will feature her as a controllable character. This not only gives hardcore Gaiden fans a new combat system to master, but also a different take on the very weird story of Ninja Gaiden.
So while there isn't a huge amount of information available about Ninja Gaiden Sigma, in reality there really doesn't need to be. We all know how Gaiden plays, how it looks, and how adding extra content is never a bad thing. The real question, though, is if PS3 owners buy this game up like crazy, or if it will only appeal to the hardcore fans. I know personally, after beating the game, the idea of doing it again really doesn't appeal to me. Who knows, though, maybe seeing Ryu in 720p will convince me. The biggest thing going for Ninja Gaiden Sigma it is that it will probably be one of the best action games released for the PS3 – excluding Heavenly Sword. Stay tuned for more info from VGCore.
