After a long and arduous wait, the next installment in the legendary Resident Evil franchise was showcased once again. Whilst the first trailer didn't divulge much in terms of storyline or setting, it was evident that the series is again branching out to an entirely new environment. And although we'll have to wait until July 27th to see the newest trailer in all its glory, some highly interesting new tidbits can be seen from the shorter cut teaser.

While we aren't clear on the identity of the lead character this time round, comparisons can be made with Chris Redfield, a member of the S.T.A.R.S group who debuted in the original Resident Evil. Capcom however, are yet to clear this ambiguous character up, so this is merely speculation at the moment. Whatever the case, the actual model of the character is looking visually stunning and extremely authentic.

As far as setting goes, it is highly evident that the new Resi takes place in a barren and, what one would assume, neglected village. We can see that the citizens are obviously not a happy bunch, and are seen arguing and protesting heavily during the trailer. Not only that, but the main character himself is seen being brutally beaten down, which leads us to believe that this is not the most tranquil and hospitable place on the planet.

The main question that is yet to be answered is; are the enemies in the game actually zombies this time round? Resident Evil 4 took a different path last time, and instead introduced us to a different type of enemy. From the trailer, it looks as though number 5 could be doing the same. At one point, we see a villager being held down and almost having the life sucked out of him. Not only that, but we see blood stream out of his eyes and almost start to encase the rest of his face. It is all very strange, but there is a good chance that we could be fighting some kind of hybrid, or perhaps even a similar enemy, to the one so brilliantly used in the last game.

It should be noted that all the footage in the trailer was running in real-time, off an Xbox 360. Hence graphically, the new Resident Evil is looking incredible. Lighting and character models in particular looked spectacular, and the whole environment looks beautifully rendered. It is safe to say that Resident Evil 5 is one of the best looking games out there.

Although Resident Evil 5 isn't expected to launch until early 2008, our excitement and anticipation is already through the roof. The franchise epitomizes everything good about the survival-horror genre, and wraps it together in one beautifully presented package. Look for RE5 to be a hot contender for game-of-the-year when it releases.
